I have yet to clean and detail my engine and engine compartment...any suggestions? It used to be so simple...cover the distributor, carburetor, alternator, spray on the cleaner and hose it off...a bit more intimidating these days

I just take mine to the car wash, use there engine cleaner and spray it off with the engine running, I do the wheel wells and under side of the car then drive it for about 20 minutes. take it home and wash the rest.
Last time I washed it, using the exact method you listed it ran a bit rough for a few days before all the wa wa got out I guess.
I guess my main concern is getting water in places where it does not belong...do either of you wrap or cover anything (coils, alternator, etc) before spraying?
Had my friends dad who is a VERY car savvy person, he inspected it and said I didn't need to cover anything. Sprayed and washed, no issues. MY concern was messing something electric up which is why I had a weird look on my face when they said to wash with the engine on. Oh well.
I don't cover anything. like I said I keep it running while I clean it. then drive for a few.
You dont want to hit hot parts with cold water, bad things will happen, Id spray a warm engine and let it sit to dry. There are lots of electrical connections that you dont know if they are 100% water tight.
Exhaust manifolds are usually red hot, look at them on a dark night and you can see it, and hitting them with cold water can cause them to crack or warp.
