    Chipping the P71 motor

I just picked up a 2006 CVPI that is undergoing resto work now. I have read about various chips that can enhance engine performance/mileage. I'm not too interested in the horsepower aspect, but would love to increase the gas mileage and reliablility. Anyone have any experience or recommendations? PS- I'll still have to get through Jersey emissions Inspection every 2 years.

Most chips are nothing but scams. To get the real poop talk to Lonnie at Blue Oval Chips and tell him what you want.

I just bought a 96 p71 unmarked, it belonged to the Batavia il. pd. My mech told me it doesn't have a chip have to get it reflashed to pd specs where or who does that.

The whole public idea that police cars have chips is just as idiotic as the idea that cops ONLY use a radar gun or HAVE to in order to catch you for speeding. I'm also confused, the mech said you didn't have a "performance" chip but your asking about where to get it reflashed? Also, there are no PD specs, even if there were I doubt they would allow you to use them.

    Re: Chipping the P71 motor

I am sorry I did not make my self clear, as I am new to these cars and what I see as a lifestyle I will try to communicate better. My mechanic told me that this model p71 did not have a chip but instead the programming of the computer had been detuned by the p,d, before sale to the public my question is if this is true then does someone know how to restore that to its original settings or am I screwed. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

    Re: Chipping the P71 motor

First off----Welcome to the forum. Second--------Most retired police vehicles have the same computer tune as they left the factory with because it cost around $200 or so for the dealer to de-tune them, and they would also need a program to do it with. So I wouldn't worry about the tune. If you make performance mods to the engine you will need a computer to get the most out of them. The program is expensive and the tool to do it with is also expensive. Tool and program can be had from Blue Oval Chips for close to $400.
If it is like most used police cars it does need a conventional tune up and all the fluids changed out. Good luck with your project.

Thank you for your help my p71 is in a fine mechanical state the body is a little rough but I dont mind the exhaust is straight from the cats back and I have ordered the cold air intake. I prefer to keep my mods more on the mechanical side, dont get me wrong I will clean it up but the idea of a sleeper has always fascinated me. I was driving southbound on the tollway near me after the exhaust workover when a tuner in a honda pulled up next to me. All I did was pop it in neutral and blipped the throttle you should havs seen the look it was priceless. I look forward to seeing more of this site.

Could you offer a general idea of what the difference would be between tuned and de tuned? If it's significant and would suite you better perfomance wise having it back to factory setting then by all means look into getting it restored.

Sorry if my first post seems a bit crass and assholish, had some other things bothering my mind at the time.

I don't believe that my 71 is really performing to its full potential. The pd that had it has its maintenance done by 1 dealership, I know the head tech there we play golf together I am going to quiz him about this problem and go from there.
