    New tires for a 2006 17"

Been pricing out new tires for my 2006 with 17" steel wheels. Been reading here about Good Year RSA's and Firestone Firehawk Pursuits. I would like to maintain the full size and beefy width, but a little cheaper if possible. Is there a big difference in size and width in using GoodYear Eagle GT's or regular Firehawks? Or any other major brand? High speeds or performance is not really an issue for me, I want to keep that "fat tire" look.

If you don't want to keep the V speed rating (or do) check out Kelly , Cooper and Yokahama tires. I would stick with Traction A and Temp A (no less than B) and a minimum speed rating of H. Those should be a little cheaper on you. I bought a set of 225/60 16 Goodyear Eagle GT with V speed rating for just under $100 each from Sears.

Ok thanks. Sears does seem to have the best prices, actually they beat Sams Club, and I have an "in" at my local Sears Auto.

I put these same tires on my CVPI, and they look and handle great. Got mine from Discount Tire on special for $102/ea. with $100 mail in rebate.

I know! I couldn't pass that offer up. It had Firestones on it when I got, and they rode like rocks compared to the Goodyears.

If you want to keep the "fat tire" look why not go one tire size bigger? 235/55/17 is your O.E. tire size. the next size up is 255/50/17 (thats called plus zero tire sizing) The Discount Tire web site will tell ya all about that stuff. And incase your wondering, yes you can go the route of using 18' wheels of the Mercury Maurauder and have stagered tire sizes.

I thought about that, I've done that with other vehicles but it threw off the speedometer. How much will this stepup effect the speedo & will this result in an inside frame tire rub?

    Re: New tires for a 2006 17"

This wont affect the speedo because the different tire sizes are WIDER not TALLER. Diesel I'll give you some tire 101. first lets explain what the numbers mean on a tire size.235/55/17 235:means the tread width is 235mm(wide) 55: is an aspect ratio, meaning 55% of the tread width(235 in this case) is the sidewall height 17:this is the easiest, it's the wheel diamiter in inches, 17" in this case. So a quick recap on tire sizes as follows 235mm 55% 17" 235/55/17. Now this is the part that confuses most people when it come to changing the OE tire size to something wider, they will (by shere mistake not at all intentional) also get a taller tire. Why you may ask? well they ignore the aspect ratio number (55 in this case). It's easy to make the first number bigger going from 235 to 255 wa la done right? No not it you don't change the aspect ratio. 255/55/17 vs 255/50/17 because the aspect ratios are different 55 vs 50 the 55 series tire is TALLER. Thats why the wider the size the smaller the aspect ratio. As long as OVER ALL diamater is the same go as wide as your car will allow.
