    whine at highway speeds

Just started hearing it today. It's fine until I reach around 55-60mph and then I start to hear a high pitch whine that gets higher in pitch as I accelerate. If I let off the gas it goes away, I ease into the gas again and I start to hear it.
Sounds like it's coming from right under the center of the car but sound travels so.....
U joint? need grease in dif? a bad bearing from somewhere?

My mechanics gonna take it for a spin and put it on the lift tomorrow morning, just hope I don't blow anything up till then.

<<<------halfazzed mechanic with expertise as far as changing plugs here so bear with me.

Wise man! I also use the quote - "If it aint broke, don't fix it"! However, it sounds like your describing a rear end gear noise, like Interceptor stated above.

I have 3 different vehicles of different types (van, truck, sedan) with the SOHC 4.6L V8. They all have a "whine" when you get up there in speed.

My mechanic says it's normal. I'm use to not hearing anything but exhaust because my 05' GT had a bassani xpipe with flowmasters and deletes.
He say it's typical of these drivetrains and it's not as loud as I'm making it out to be. Guess I'm good then .

My 99 has 121,000 and has that same whine coming from the rear end. Full of rear end dope so I don't worry about it. One mechanic even told me it was the gearing of the rear end. I smiled and said ok.
