Actually the power-steering on these cars tend to emit the supercharger-like 'whine' you speak of, all Fords seem to do it, even brand new 2011 mustangs, it's normal I can't hear mine whine over my modified exhaust lol Be kinda cool if they made an intake filter that mimicked the sound of a supercharger. My K&N sounds like turbo at moderate throttle lol

Mr.wiggly, my 05 did that same whine when I gave her the beans and after 2000mi the trans blew. Tonight I just dropped the trans and the car only has 11600mi on it! Not impressed with the technology and wires and plugs and goofy fluid going into this trans because I have a 67 Fastback Mustang that has the stock trans in it and it works great. And that stang gets alot of hard miles on it. When I get the new trans in the P71 I'm going to pound the crapp out of it because it can't perform any worse than driving it nice. Nice didn't work.

Bigvin, put a dial indicator on your ring gear and check the slop. Be sure to clean all the gear lube out first.
E85 is green and I dont care. But its also 105 octane = 7300RPM shift point and I really care.

Bigvin I can fix your whine at highway speeds. Throw the female out the passengerside door! That will take care of the whining!

    Re: whine at highway speeds

The P71's are a bit noiser inside than other panthers due to less insulation, rubber mat vs carpet and Hard plastic Bare door panels. My Previous Loaded 06 Gran marquis was noticable quieter lots more content in those to be quiet inside. It's just part of the package.

If you desire a quieter Ride and better sound quality from the stereo you can go crazy with Dynamat and Other Generic sound deadeners. Ebay has some good cost effective alternatives to the high cost Dynamat.

With that being said if the whine is excessive I would check rear Diff for Fluid Level and condition. If you have a posi make sure you use a Fluid With Hypoid additive for the Posi Clutch Plates.

    Re: whine at highway speeds

My 2001 does this at times. It's usually when I hit 40 or so and it will stay around. If I accelerate quickly through the point it starts (after coasting until it stops) it happens quickly, then stops. I don't get it every time, but when I do, I can hold it on for eternity if I keep a steady speed. Is this something to worry about?
